WHAT IS GEOTHERMAL HEATING AND COOLING?
Geothermal systems can be used to heat domestic or commercial buildings. The loops that are installed vertically drilled borehole or horizontally in a trench in a field that is at least 1.2 meters in depth and have water or other fluids flowing through them continuously. The natural heat in the earth heats the fluid in the pipe and this is then transferred to the building through the Ground Source Heat Pump and heating system. For cooling the heat is picked up by the liquid in the heating/ cooling system in the building and transferred back to the earth through the ground source heat pump, (GSHP).
GEOTHERMAL DRILLING
Geothermal drilling systems make up an exciting and environmentally friendly way to both heat and cool buildings. Whether commercial or domestic, by using the ground’s natural heat capacity and relatively constant temperature significant cost and environmental savings can be made.
In summer, excess heat can be dumped into the ground, and in winter, the warmer ground can be used to provide base level heating. Boreholes can be drilled to various depths dependent on the ground strata.
INSTALLATIONS
Once the boreholes are drilled to the required depth then the geothermal loops are installed. the boreholes are then filled with thermally enhanced grout to maximize heat transfer the boreholes are then sealed to prevent contamination from any surface pollutants that may be present. The thermal grout acts as a conductor between the earth’s heat and the fluid in the pipework which improves the performance of the ground loop.
